Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 1980s Fads) for Thursday, May 9, 2024 (Season 40, Game 174):

A Nov. 29 1983 N.Y. Times article about these used “near-riot”, “adoptable”, “waiting for 8 hours” & “my life (is) in danger”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Isabella Dawis, a writer, actor & musician from Minneapolis, Minnesota
Today's Final Jeopardy - Thursday, May 9, 2024 (1)
Jennifer Trofa, a talent manager from Los Angeles, California
Today's Final Jeopardy - Thursday, May 9, 2024 (2)
Allison Gross, a data scientist from Cleveland, Ohio (2-day total: $19,598)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Thursday, May 9, 2024 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Allison Gross is your two-day Jeopardy! champion; both of her wins have been for less than $10,000, though, after a couple of difficult Final Jeopardy clues. Her stats aren’t that bad, though, so I could definitely see her winning more money if Final Jeopardy turns around for her. Today’s challengers are Minnesota’s Isabella Dawis & Los Angeles’s Jennifer Trofa.

For the Christmas season in 1983, Cabbage Patch Kids dolls were the thing to have. Faced with demand significantly outpacing supply, the behavior in some locations was newsworthy, with a woman suffering a broken leg in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

Other articles in the Times detailed how manufacturer Coleco was being criticized for continuing to run ads for the dolls despite them being sold out in many places.

I hope this Final goes 3-for-3 and lots of viewers at home get it correct.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I really appreciated Allison’s clue selection strategy after “less than a minute”; going to the $400 row and clearing it out is the best strategy when trying to hold onto a runaway.
  • I also think that Isabella’s Daily Double bet was the right call; it seemed like she had deep knowledge in specialized areas, she’d made lots of money from those categories in particular, and it was a case of “try to make as much money as I can while the going is good, because I suspect the rest of the game won’t be as strong for me”.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Allison $19,600 Isabella $4,200 Jennifer $200)

Allison: Bet no more than $11,199. (Actual bet: $5,400)

Jennifer: Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: $199)

Isabella: Bet no more than $3,799. (Actual bet: $3,700)
