We know what's up!note
Diva Starz were a line of dolls created and released by Mattel in the early 21st century.
The toyline follows a group of teenagers who "know what's up" and are "in-the-know" about everything. The girls are:
- Alexa (voiced by Debi Derryberry), the fashion loving queen who's "your personal expert on style".
- Nikki (voiced by Joanna Rubiner), a fanatic of sports and hobbies.
- Summer (voiced by Amber Hood), a lover for nature and the outdoors.
- Tia (voiced by MC Lyte), a techno whiz who is into anything tech-savvy.
- Miranda (voiced by Tara Strong), the Sixth Ranger who "loves her new friends". Replaced Summer in the third wave.
The doll line was shut down in 2004 due to poor sales.
Tropes:
- Animesque: The art style for the girls. This got toned down slightly in Wave 2 and almost completely averted in Wave 3.
- Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Alexa, Nikki and Summer, respectedly.
- Braids of Action: Summer's Wave 1 design had two braided tendrils with flowered barrettes. Tia's Wave 2 design had a trio of braided pigtails.
- Catchphrase:
- Several for the Divas. Alexa's were "Ooh-la-la!" and "Tres chic!". Nikki's was "Hyper cool!". Tia's was "Funk-o-matic!"
- On Across the Hall, the character Tony had "How you doin'?"
- Costume Evolution: The Divas' wardrobe for Wave 1 is simply just a tank top, a pair of matching pants or skirt, and the same big shoes. As each wave progressed, their wardrobe expanded to more realistic clothing.
- First Day of School Episode: "Fashion Emergency" has the Divas shop at the mall and try on clothes for their first day of school the following day.
- Four-Girl Ensemble: Alexa's the sassy one, Nikki's the brash one, Summer's the sweet one, and Tia's the smart one.
- Girlish Pigtails: Alexa wears these as part of her Wave 1 design, while her Wave 2 design makes them more scruffier and twisted. Tia's hair in Wave 2 has her hair in braided pigtails.
- Good News, Bad News: In "Diva Starz Rock the House", Summer shows up before the others with good news and bad news. The good news is she brought the instruments for their act. The bad news is they're out of tune.
- Gratuitous French: Jacques, the salon stylist in "The Big Dance", shows shades of this.
- Group Picture Ending: "The Big Dance" ends with the Divas and their dance dates getting their picture taken.
- Multiple Endings:
- The webisode "Diva Starz Hit the Slopes" has the Divas crushing on a snowboarder named Hans and doing their best to impress him. Depending on whatever Diva you play as in the minigame, Hans will present that Diva some hot chocolate at the lodge.
- Depending on which Diva scores the most points in "Diva Galleria Shopping Spree", that Diva will cheer in the final scene, or if it's a tie, they will all cheer.
- Opening Narration: For the first webisode "Meet Us at the Mall":
Once, there were four very different girls. Each girl had a different style. Each girl had a different attitude. And each girl had a different way of being a girl. But something changed all that... They just happened to run into each other at the mall.
- Origins Episode: The webisode "Meet Us at the Mall" shows how the girls first met at the mall by unexpectedly bumping into each other and mixing up their stuff.
- Password Save: The "Mall Mania" game has one. After successfully getting a Diva ready for the fashion show, you'll be given a 10-slot password which consists of letters, if you wish to continue where you left off.
- Put on a Bus: Summer disappears from Wave 3, and Miranda takes her place. According to Tia in "Pop Star Dreams", she's on an ocean rescue mission with her family.
- Shouldn't We Be in School Right Now?: The Divas have not been seen attending school. Judging by their age, they could be either in their late Middle School years or their Freshman year in High School. According to the webisodes, they were on summer break, and "Fashion Emergency" takes place the day before they go back.
- Show Within a Show: "Hollywood, Diva Style" had Across the Hall.
- The Show Goes Hollywood: In "Hollywood, Diva Style", the girls win a contest to go to Hollywood and redesign one of the sets of their favorite show.
- Show Within a Show: "Hollywood, Diva Style" gives us the comedy Across the Hall.
- Strictly Formula: Each webisode goes as follows. The Diva Starz go about their lives, then something fun sparks up the plot. This then transitions to a minigame the player can choose to play or skip to advance the story. The ending of the webisode is different depending on the results of said minigame.
- Tag Line: "We know what's up!" Slightly changed to "We know what's stylin'!" in Wave 3.
- Virtual Paper Doll:
- In "Dress 'Em and Do the Walk", you get to choose which outfits and hairstyles the Divas get to wear for their fashion show.
- In "The Big Dance", you get to give the Divas makeovers for their big dance later.
- In "Fashion Emergency", you pick which outfits each Diva gets to wear for their first day of school.
- You Don't Look Like You: The girls' designs for Wave 3 look larger and more realistic, and their heads are smaller, as if they gotten a bit older.
